We often train in people's homes, and one of the common questions we get it - can my child train with us? The customers are often surprised when we say yes.
Kids as young as 7 or 8 have attended CPR training with our staff, but don't usually certify. Not because they don't understand the material, but because they are physically too small to perform the skills properly. Learning the skills that young can teach them to recognize emergencies, how and when to call 911, and can help make them a little more safety-minded overall. If requested, we can generate a full-sized Junior Rescuer certificate for a child who attends a class, so they know we appreciated their attention.
Most kids are large enough to certify around 11 or 12. This is really helpful for kids who want to start babysitting or working as a mother's helper. Showing a parent a First Aid or CPR card can really ease their mind when it comes to having a young teenager help with their kids.
We find a first aid card to be the most important in that age group. It does include the choking skills, but it helps students understand the difference between a boo boo and an injury. It teaches them to handle minor injuries, and to understand that calling a parent for an injured child is acceptable and expected. It can help them feel competent and professional, making them more confident in front of the parents and child. It's also a lot of fun.
Please feel free to ask if your reasonably behaved school-aged child can be included in the training. We're happy to work with them (and you)!
